ACTIVITY TWO: Fur Trade Role Play

Create a fur trade drama focusing on

  • the journey down-river with the pelts to a Hudson's Bay Company fort.
  •  
  • the ceremony involved before trade.
  •  
  • the actual bartering of furs for supplies.

Materials Needed
  • Costumes—First Nations/European costumes.
  • Ceremonial Gifts—such as cloth or imaginary tobacco.
  • Ceremonial Peace Pipe (can be made of clay and wood).
  • Items to trade—furs, axes, blankets, guns, etc. (can be imaginary or mockups).

Instructions

Using the information found in this site or the books listed in the bibliography, create a short story about the fur trade to act out in front of your classmates. Be sure to include the topics listed in the focus guide above.

Curriculum Objectives for Grade Five Social Studies

  • This activity can complement a lesson unit dealing with the society and culture of Canada's Aboriginal Peoples.
  • This activity can be used to aid children in communicating orally and through writing.
