Before the arrival of the missionaries, the Ktunaxa occupied a large territory. These territories are referred to as the "Aboriginal Lands".

All the Ktunaxa people had tasks to do in their communities. Elders, men, women, and children each had an important role in the community.

Education was a family responsibility and began at an early age. The elders played an essential role in passing on their culture to the children.
