Songhees RelocationThe Lekwungen people, also known as the Songhees, were granted, by Sir James Douglas, a reserve across the harbour from Fort Victoria. As time passed and Victoria grew, demand for land intensified and a decision was made to negotiate a relocation of the Songhees reserve to allow development upon what had become very valuable property. The ceremony, on the 4th of April, 1911, accompanying the relocation of the Lekwungen people and the transfer of their reserve to the provincial government was covered by both newspapers in Victoria, the Daily Times and the Colonist.
