Housing

Coast Salish people often lived in bighouses (sometimes called longhouses). A whole extended family might live in the bighouse, including grandparents and other relatives. Each nuclear family would have a section of its own, divided from the others by woven cedar mats. Today, most of the bighouses still standing are used for ceremonies rather than day-to-day living. The bighouse in the pictures, at Lumlumuluts was owned by Ben George and Esther Joe at the time the pictures were taken.
