The
Kispiox Valley has many memorial events. Among them is the Wayne
Bowe Saddle Bronc Awards. Wayne was the son of one of BC's favorite
cowboys, Gil Bowe, who lives in Prince George and runs a saddle
making shop there. Wayne was a dedicated cowboy and a good saddle
bronc rider.
The
Gerrit Pelsma Team Roping Memorial award is in fond memory of a
local horse breeder who always took an active part in helping to
organize the rodeo, and participated in many different events. Jim
Clearwater, a Smithers cowboy, always competed at Kispiox. He won
Calf Roping during the last rodeo he entered here. He was well-liked
throughout the rodeo world. He raised good horses, and was an avid
sportsman.
The
bareback riding trophy was dedicated to Jack Lee, a valley resident
for many, many years. Jack was a rodeo cowboy and later went into
the guiding business. He never missed a rodeo. Some of Jack's grandkids
are helping keep alive the rodeo tradition, working endless hours
on the rodeo committee.
Jimmy
McRae was a native cowboy who for many years helped organize the
rodeo. Jimmy participated in the roundups, and since he was always
winning the cowhide race, we made this an annual event in his honor.
