Berry Picking

If we arrived in the summer we could join the Carrier people in their yearly food-gathering activities. Summer was an important food-gathering season in the Carrier cycle; when, aside from salmon, berries as well as the roots and shoots of various plants were gathered. These provided the Lheidli T'enneh with all the vegetable food they required. The Carrier harvested many types of berries, including K'enmai, tsalhtsetsun, yalhtsue, and hingwus.

The L'heidli T'enneh often ate these berries fresh but they would also mash and dry the berries into small cakes that were suitable for storage. These cakes required only an overnight soaking to become edible.

The Lheidli T'enneh gathered their food with baskets, and so the making of these baskets was an important skill. They were made of birchbark, spruce roots and coils of red willow. Porcupine quills were also woven through the spruce to create a tabby weave.
