WILLIAM AND SUSAN CONNOLY
(AMELIA'S PARENTS)

Amelia's father, William Connoly was born in Lachine, British North America (what we now call Manitoba, Canada), though his family was of Irish decent. He joined the North West Company (later to become part of the Hudson's Bay Company) when he was a young teenager.

Connoly did very well as a fur trader and was promoted to the rank of Chief Factor, or manager of the fur trading fort. Connoly worked in many different trading posts, and it was at his stay at Rat River House (now the city of Flin Flon Manitoba) that he met and married Susan Pas-de nom, the daughter of a powerful Cree Chieftain.

Susan and William were married according to "the custom of the country", and had five or six children who lived past infancy, and the oldest of the girls was Amelia, born in 1812.

Amelia's father was promoted to Chief Factor at Fort St. James, located at the Southern tip of Stuart Lake. It was there that the 21 year old James Douglas was hired as a clerk under his leadership. James met Amelia, and the two were married.
