THE BIRDCAGES

The "Birdcages" were the first Legislative buildings for the colony of Vancouver Island. Built in 1859, they were meant to house all departments of the growing colonial government. They earned the nick name "Birdcages" because of their eclectic architectural style. In 1894-97, they were replaced by the Parliment Buildings that stand today. The original Legislative Hall, house of the Legislative Assembly, was preserved until it was destroyed by fire in 1957.
