Phase 2 of the Major Renovations
During this time, more effort was spent to restore Helmcken House to its original condition, but at the same time making minor alterations.
Exterior: The asphalt shingles on the roof of the building were replaced with a new cedar shake roof, which was the original style of the house. New exterior paint was applied, making the house all white. This meant that the differently coloured trim was painted over. Some changes were done to the structure of the house.
Interior: At this time, extensive interior renovations and redecorations were carried out. In the original house, the fir floors were replaced with new fir. Also the walls and ceilings, built from wood lath covered in a layer of plaster, were replaced with new drywall and plaster.
Alterations: Some changes were made to add to the functionality of the house and in the interest of the public. Some years before the restoration phase that began in 1963, a fire alarm system was installed. Also some time before or during this phase, a new exhaust system was installed in the original attic space. It was most likely at this time that an upgraded heating system was installed in the house.
