Work in groups of two people each. Your team will make a display about a historical theme relating to the site that you choose. YOUR PROJECT: Part 1 For your project you will make an interpretative display or maquette. Most of you have been to museums to see exhibits and displays of artifacts. These displays give you an idea about the material culture and tools that went with a certain social group at a certain time. For example, if you were in a museum looking at an exhibition about First Nation's Tribes on the Plains, there would be many artifacts all relating to some aspect of life at that time. There might be a small display of baby carriers, another displaying tobacco pouches, or another about medicine bags. Your project is to create a display, on view for the class, which shows an aspect of life at one of the Measured Drawing sites. Part 2: Interpretive Text The display you create should be labeled with text headings. As well, provide a brief explanation about each artifact you display. The text should be neat and unobtrusive. You might want to put it 'outside' the actual display. Text needs to be brief, concise and exciting Strong title Bold, big font and careful, neat presentation Try finding a book that talks about making museum exhibits and graphical skills. Presentation Day: On presentation day, the class will set up their displays for viewing in a place you have chosen. Each group will present a ten-minute spoken presentation describing their maquette. Perhaps the displays could be left for the whole school to look at. You might be able to arrange a special room or set up the maquettes in the school's display cases. Ideas There are many exciting ways you could approach this project. The displays don't have to be overly elaborate. Something that seems small and insignificant often tells us a lot about the way everyday life was. Read the sites and brainstorm. Read about the hints for finding artifacts in 'making your displays' below. Here are a few ideas for the maquettes: R.B. Mclean Sawmill An average logger's possessions Southpark School An old, worn student's desk with schoolbooks and a lunch in it. The school's old curriculum, old sports equipment and a uniform. Pictures from the archives of the former teachers A set of rules for teacher's behavior An old report card Making Your Displays Your displays will probably be a combination of found, borrowed, made and old artifacts and pictures. Your family might have old treasures you could use in your display. For Example: One group has decided to make a display describing opening day of the Hope CPR Railway Station. Genuine Old Stuff We have an old railway spike An uncle's old CPR badge and a copy of his pay stub. We have an old suitcase we have decided to put the display in. Stuff We Make A piece of old silk which can be used to represent the silk trains that travelled through the Fraser Valley on their way to the east coast. A reproduction of a poster telling people to move out west. Stuff we find A picture in the BC Provincial Archive Site of Opening Day, Hope Railway Station. An advertising picture for train travel on the CPR. A railroader's hat.
