For example, your group might choose to present an interpretive show about the Bastion in Nanaimo, BC. You decide to perform a fictional play loosely based on authentic historical events.

THE RESEARCH PROCESS

From your reading you find out the Bastion was a Hudson's Bay Fort but it was never attacked. The Hudson's Bay Company thought they needed to protect themselves from the First Nation's people in the region.

  • Gather information about the Hudson's Bay Factor (bureaucrat).

  • Collect historical information about the First Nation's Leader.

  • Research the daily trading activities at the Bastion.

  • Try and discover if any controversies took place at the fort.

INFORMATION SOURCES

  • Historical books, archives, old newspapers, Hudson's Bay archival material, historical biography, the local oral story-telling tradition, First Nation mythology, history textbooks and historical websites.

Informative websites

Develop your skit around your historical research. Try to be as authentic as possible with the events, the artifacts and the details of daily life. One of you could take on the role of the Chief Factor and one of you could take on the role of a First Nation's person. The most effective plays contain controversy and a well-developed plot.

Remember: We often interpret historical events in a different way than we did in the past, or we rethink the old way history was presented to us. This is called revisionist history.
