Wells Heritage Townsite
The Townsite Company built Wells between 1934-1936 to house the miners of the 'Quartz'. Peak population was 4500, dropping to 300 when 'old number one', the last shaft of the Quartz Mine closed in 1967. Today (1999) Wells is a quiet but well preserved mining town situated in an area of rich historic, recreational, scenic and mineral value. The significance of it's architectural and heritage tourism resources derive from the charming vernacular of the buildings and the clustering of streets and buildings originally created by the Townsite Company. This 1930's gold rush town is an interesting compliment, and contrast, to the 1860's placer mining town of Barkerville - a major Provincial Historic Site 5 miles down the road.
