Both the Sawmill and FlourMill operated using the 7 horsepower steam engine McKenzie had brought from Scotland.
Melrose notes that the Sawmill was started on Saturday, April 9 and has a shed put over it on June 22, 1853.
- Sept. 28: Another Saw-table erected.
- Oct. 26: SawMill going all night.
- Nov. 1: Saw Mill Shed slabbed all around.
- Nov. 9: 2 vices, 1 anvil, 2 handsaws and
cargo of Iron received from San Francisco.
A document from 1861 listed the sawmill as containing:
- Saw table
- Small saw table
- Shafting and belting
- Brasses and shafting Files
A number of Saws including:
- 2 new circular saws
- 4 small circular saws
- 3 large circular saws
- 4 second hand saws
- 4 iron crow bars
- 2 large iron keys for saw table
- 1 tin funnel
- 2 oil feeders
