In 1855, the Craigflower Inventory listed the following livestock at the farm:

  • 14 horses
  • 15 milch cows
  • 12 working oxen
  • 83 other cattle
  • 1126 sheep
  • 27 swine
  • 80 poultry
Cow

In Scotland, the 'laird' of the estate gave each married labourer a cow and chickens. McKenzie gave each of the Craigflower farmhands a cow a chicken to provide eggs and dairy for every family.

Classroom activity: Ask a local farmer what varieties of sheep and chickens they raise. Visit a farm to see the differences between the different breeds. Do research on the WWW for Rare Breeds website.
