B.C. Archives (A_02943) In 1853 the emigrants built their own homes, cleared land, planted gardens and fields, set up the 7 horsepower engine brought from England to run a sawmill and grind grain.

Dwelling Houses & Family Homes

They began a limekiln when they discovered a deposit of limestone on the land and established a brickwork. They also built a slaughterhouse, blacksmith's shop, and a carpentry shop.


To the Out-Buildings

They had a bakery which supplied bread for the settlers, for Fort Victoria. The farm had a contract with the Royal Navy to supply bread and biscuits for all the ships of Her Majesty's Navy docking at Esquimalt.

They built the School for their children in 1854.

Not until 1856 did Kenneth McKenzie and his family move into their fine home - Craigflower Manor.
