Frogs begin life as eggs

Frogs eggs hatch in or near water

Baby frogs have tails and no legs!

Baby frogs are called polliwogs, or tadpoles.

Like fish, they have gills, which let them breathe underwater.

Then, each polliwog (tadpole) goes through a change called metamorphosis.

Through this change, the polliwog grows legs and its tail shrinks!

First the hind legs grow, then the front legs grow.

The polliwog gills slowly close and it develops lungs that will let it breathe out of water

Finally, when the polliwog has grown the body parts it needs to live on land, it hops onto land as a frog!
