Science

The girls at Craigflower Schoolhouse would be told to work on learning recipes and cooking, while the boys were taught things like math and biology!

The Craigflower immigrants were Scottish settlers.

The girls would learn how to cook food from Scotland.

Oatmeal is part of the Scottish diet. The Craigflower community had their own mill and ground their own meal.

Some of the best known Scottish dishes are porridge and oatcakes.> Here's a lesson the girls would have done: Ingredients:

2 handfuls plain flour
1 lb medium oatmeal
6 oz shortening
1 cup cold water
1 teaspoon salt

Method
Put oatmeal, flour, and salt in a basin and mix. Make a well in the center and pour in the hot melted fat and cold water. Mix well and then roll into small balls with floured hands, to prevent sticking. Roll out each ball and cut into four. Bake in moderate oven at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes.
