Duncan was a carpenter at Craigflower. He was hired to build the grist mill. Elizabeth, William and Margaret travelled to Craigflower on the Norman Morison when they were young.
In 1858 the Lidgate family bought 50 acres on the Saanich Peninsula for 50 pounds. They built a house they called "Rose May Cottage". Duncan Lidgate built their furniture. They grew wheat and potatoes on their farm.
